with all the buzz about Natal, It's Sony counterpart and the little box that started it all. It makes me wonder as to the future of video games.
Does anyone remember a time when video games didn't have achievements/trophies *gasp*. we still played it and loved every minute of it. remember when all games were in only 2 DIMENSIONS *double gasp*. well we thought Contra, Sonic, Mario and all that were awesome. Remember when the graphics looked like lego. top selling console in the world right there. It seems as more is available the worse people feel.
I've seen friends go crazy from having to get all the achievements, needing to get the last platinum trophy. it seems like since we strayed from gameplay enhancement to "on the side", gaming is less about having fun and more about your life away from life. even gameplay enhancements are being put to this fate. Motion sensing was crazy in it's first hit back on the older systems but now it is a battle ground. which will prevail, will Microsoft or Sony capitalize on the motion sensing craze or will the Wii remain dominant.
We are turning video gaming into a competition. we are turning every idea that could make games better and turning them into a battle of fanboys. remember how the 360 fanboys bashed the PS3 for not having an achievement system, or the PS3 fanboys bashing the Wii for it's last gen graphics, of the one with the excessive RROD's. the list goes on.
So why do "gamers" take pleasure away from those who chose differently, and why do they take it away from themselves. is the future of gaming just a ceaseless back and forth over superiority while the core principle of video games is forgotten? ask yourself. how many times have you acted like a fanboy (or fangirl). how many times did help take video games to the point of no return. It is a crime we are all guilty of weather we think lowly of someone with the wrong system or blatantly harass them.
Will we as games return to our roots of having fun and killing time or will are we doomed to just having the time to kill our fun...
